Gymnastics Australia’s Georgia Godwin has finished her World Championship campaign strongly overnight with clean routines across the Women’s All-Around Final in Stuttgart, Germany.
In a field of 24 athletes representing more than 15 countries, Godwin was the sole athlete representing Australia after qualifying for the final on October 6.
Proudly wearing Green and Gold, Godwin performed beautifully across all four apparatus earning herself a total score of 53.832.
For Godwin, the event has been a rollercoaster having earned an Olympic Quota spot for Tokyo 2020 in the qualifying rounds, and then having to refocus to compete in the All-Around final five days later.
“I really enjoyed it,” Godwin said.
“I’m pleased with my beam routine and scoring in the 13.00s which was an objective between myself and the national coach.
“There is room for improvement, and I aim to add new elements to increase my difficulty (D) score.
“I’m really happy with how far I’ve come from being out of competition for eight months due to injury to competing in a World Championship final. I’m really looking forward to the next phase of preparation for Tokyo 2020.”
Gymnastics Australia’s National Performance Director Andrew Logan said that he was incredibly pleased with Godwin’s performance both on and off the floor throughout the event.
“Georgia Godwin making finals in individual all-around and today also improving to place 18th behind the untouchable Simone Biles reinforces that our overall performance is heading in the right direction.” Logan said.
“Whilst the team had its own challenges being first up competing on day one, on the most challenging apparatus balance beam and also in front of the judges, they performed admirably to improve significantly from 2018 by a margin of 5 points but to narrowly miss Tokyo 2020 Olympic Team quota by one.
“I’m pleased with Georgia’s approach and feel that with attention to increasing the difficulty score that she will be ready for Tokyo 2020.”
The All-Around final saw some incredible results with World Champion and American Super Star Simone Biles taking out the Gold Medal with a score of 58.999, followed by Tang Xijing from China (56.899) with Silver and Russian Angelina Melnikova (56.399) with Bronze.
The focus in Stuttgart now turns to the Men’s Individual Apparatus Finals on Sunday where Australia’s Tyson Bull will be competing on Horizonal Bar.
Bull’s Final will be broadcast live on FOX SPORTS Australia and Kayo from 10pm AEDT Sunday.
