BOXING: Australia has picked up four gold medals at the Oceania Boxing Championships in Canberra, with Commonwealth Games silver medalist Joe Goodall leading the way in the super heavyweight division.
There was also gold for Goodall’s Glasgow teammate, Daniel Lewis, and South Australia’s David Biddle.
Goodall could not have been more impressive in his unanimous points decision over New Zealand’s Patrick Mailata.
The Queenslander, who has had a disrupted preparation battling glandular fever, went on the attack from the outset and will head to this year’s World Championships full of confidence.
New South Welshman, Daniel Lewis, is another who will be expecting a strong performance in Doha after a unanimous points decision over Papua New Guinea’s Jonathan Keama, a gold medalist at the recent Pacific Games.
Lewis showed he has the ability to mix it with the world’s best after winning gold at an international invitational event in Doha earlier this year.
He also has a point to prove after doctors ruled him out of last year’s Commonwealth Games with a cut eye.
South Australia’s Biddle was far too strong for Nauru’s Colan Caleb, enjoying a unanimous points decision.
Australia’s Aaron Spagnolo was awarded the 81kg gold medal in a walkover of his opponent, American Samoa’s Pasefika Iti.
New Zealand’s Commonwealth Games gold medalist, David Nyika, beat Australia’s Jason Whateley for gold in the 91kg class, while another New Zealander, Joshua Nyika, beat Queensland’s Nathan Webber in the 69kg division.
And Chad Milnes made it a trifecta for New Zealand with a unanimous points decision over Australia’s Josh Keirl in the 60kg.
Papua New Guinea picked up the gold in the men’s flyweight, Charles Keama beating New Zealand’s Ivan Pavich in the final.
And Vanuatu’s Boe Warawara won the men’s bantamweight in a walkover from Australia’s Jayden Hansen.
