Gangwon 2024 Selection

The Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) has announced the selection of three figure skating, one short track speed skating and six biathlon athletes for the 2024 Winter Youth Olympic Games (WYOG) in Gangwon, South Korea.

In an Australian first, Kryshtof Pradeaux and Peyton Bellamy-Martins will compete in the figure skating pairs event at the WYOG, while Sienna Kaczmarczyk has been selected for the women's figure skating singles event - the first Australian woman to compete in this event since the Innsbruck 2012 WYOG.

Meet the Australian Gangwon 2024 Youth Olympic Team.

Ava McCann, Alessandra Sydun-West, Bridget Harvey, Phoenix Sparke, Edward Woodhouse-Bedak and Matthew Wilby have been selected to represent Australia in Biathlon competing in the sprint, individual and mixed relay events.

Aditya Nghiem has been selected to take on the fastest skaters in the world in the short track speed skating, competing in the 500m, 1000m and 1500m.

Australian Chef de Mission and Vancouver 2010 Olympian Ramone Cooper congratulated the athletes.

“I’m thrilled to announce the ten athletes to represent Australia in figure skating, short track speed skating and biathlon at the 2024 Winter Youth Olympic Games, taking our selected team size to 23 of an expected 53-strong Australian team,” Mr Cooper said.

"The WYOG is the ultimate international multi-sport event for emerging elite athletes, providing an opportunity for our athletes to test themselves against the best in the world in their age group and embrace the Olympic values of friendship, respect and excellence.”

"I have no doubt these young athletes will represent our country with pride, and I look forward to seeing them shine on the world stage.”

"Congratulations again to each of the athletes selected, and to their families, coaches, National Federations and supporters.”

With 50 days to go until Gangwon 2024, the WYOG will bring together a record 1900 athletes from 70 nations to compete across 7 sports, 15 disciplines and 81 events.

The 2024 WYOG presents a unique opportunity for biathlete Ava McCann, whose mother is Korean. The seventeen-year-old said she was thrilled to be selected to the team and looks forward to competing in front of her Korean family.

“The Olympic Rings are the most powerful symbol of international friendship and cooperation, and to represent Australia at the Youth Olympic Games in Korea has been a lifelong dream of mine,” Ava said.

“I am looking forward to getting to Gangwon and continuing to develop the great friendships I have made training and racing in Biathlon, and of course to have my Korean family watch me race!”

Fifteen-year-old Kryshtof Pradeaux said while he has always been proud of his achievements in figure skating, being selected to the Australian Team for Gangwon 2024 takes this to the next level.

“I am so proud and honoured to be selected to represent Australia at the Youth Olympic Games, it feels like all my hard work is paying off,” Kryshtof said.

“I’m looking forward to representing my country and experiencing the Olympic atmosphere in Gangwon, meeting other athletes from around the world, performing to the best of my ability and making Australia proud!"

Gangwon is the fourth edition of the WYOG, following Innsbruck 2012, Lillehammer 2016 and Lausanne 2020, and the first to be held in Asia.

With sustainability a key focus of the Games, the majority of events will take place in pre-existing venues built for the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympics.

The AOC expects to send a team of 53 athletes to Gangwon, competing across 8 disciplines: Biathlon, Ice Hockey, Short Track Speed Skating, Figure Skating, Alpine Skiing, Cross Country Skiing, Freestyle Skiing and Snowboard.
