FIGURE SKATING: With just one sleep to go until Aussie figure skater Brendan Kerry takes to the ice for his short program, there's only one thing on the 27-year-old's mind.

“I want a clean skate, I want to go out there and know I left it all on the ice,” Brendan said.

The 27-year-old is still buoyed by his experience as a Flag Bearer at the Opening Ceremony and now hopes to make his Beijing 2022 Games even more memorable with a strong performance.

“Being a Flag Bearer has made this whole experience so much more memorable, and if I can go out tomorrow and do a clean skate that will really be the cherry on top,” Brendan said.

“I feel as ready as possible, but with competition in sport it’s always what happens on the day – that’s the only thing that matters and I’m very aware of that.”

The three-time Olympian is planning an emotional routine to Tom Walker’s Leave A Light On for the technically-demanding short program.

“I find the music comfortable to skate to and I’ve received lots of compliments for the choreography so I’m hoping the audience and judges will like it."

The short program requires skaters to complete seven elements and Brendan plans to open with a quadruple toe loop. It’s a difficult jump that requires him to launch from one foot into the air, rotating four times and landing with an impact up to 10 times his body weight.

“I didn’t go for the quad toe in practice today because it wasn’t feeling quite right, but I know what I need to do for tomorrow to make it happen,” Kerry said.

“If I can get a clean skate out I’ll be looking for a season’s best score, that would be amazing. After that I’ll let the results take care of themselves.”

To move through to the free program, skaters need to place in the top 24 of the field. Brendan will skate second in the third group, with the entire session beginning at 12:15pm AEDT Tuesday 8 February on Channel 7 and 7plus.

“I feel as ready as possible.

“For now I’m resting, resetting and doing everything I can to be focused and in the best headspace. Aside from that I’m just crossing my fingers.”
