Every minute of every day crucial: Sochi 2014

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) says the Russian organisers of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi have made a lot of progress but there is still much work to be done to stage the Games.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) says the Russian organisers of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi have made a lot of progress but there is still much work to be done to stage the Games.

Jean Claude Killy, the famous skier and IOC member, told the IOC Session in Durban, South Africa, “every day every minute will count but we are confident Sochi has the skills to be successful and meet their challenges”.

Killy heads of the IOC Co-ordination commission which oversees Games’ preparations.

“We are impressed by the speed that Sochi is changing. The first test event held in February this year is proof of their progress and the government is committed to the Games”.

“Work is moving ahead satisfactorily but the work timetable is really tight, the next 12 months is crucial,” he said.

Sochi organisers say they are on track and on budget. There has been a massive upgrade of transport infrastructure.

They are planning two venue clusters, one on the coast and one in the mountains. The athlete’s village will be on the coast just ten minutes away from the airport.

The mountain venues will be 48 kilometres away fed by new roads.

“The plan is to finish the mountain and coastal venues two seasons before the start of the Games.  All the infrastructure will be done by 2012 for the Olympic Park. Everything is well on track,” they said.

Very many hotels need to built to handle the thousands of Games’ visitors. Organiser say the Olympic Park will easily handle 100,000 visitors.

The future of the Olympic Park looks bright. The infrastructure will be used to stage a Formula One race and as part of the FIFA World Cup.

The Sochi program has had 12 new events added to it including Slopestyle and women’s ski jumping.

“It is a fantastic forward thrust for the Olympic Games. These new events will always be linked to the games in Sochi”.
