DIVING: Australia’s Domonic Bedggood has finished 12th in the men’s 10m platform final at Maria Lenk Aquatics Centre.
Making his Olympic debut, the 21 year-old from the Gold Coast scored a total of 403.80 points.
A great effort considering Bedggood only took up diving in 2010 after he broke his back in a gymnastics accident.
Bedggood said he feels like he has got a lot more to give.
“I’m just trying to take this as experience, fuel the fire for the next four years,” Bedggood said.
“You know it’s my first Olympics and I’m happy to make the finals but very disappointed in the performance I put out there today.”
It was a tense final that saw some divers succumb to the pressure, with the 12 men performing six dives of varying degrees of difficulty.
China’s Bo Qiu scored a perfect 10 in round three – the first all week.
“Men’s 10m platform is always very high quality field so I guess I wanted to feel like I deserved to be out there, but with that performance I didn’t really. It is what it is,” Bedggood continued.
“I thought everything was technically there, just a few little things to work on to really improve those dives, so I guess that’s what the next four years are for.”
But it was China’s Aisen Chen who convincingly won the gold medal.
Mexico’s German Sanchez took out the silver while David Boudia of the USA finished with bronze.
This evening’s men’s 10m platform final completes the diving competition here in Rio.
