Day 16 (Sunday, August 21)

On the final day of competition, Australia will shoot for an historic first ever basketball medal and has three runners in the men’s marathon.

ATHLETICS – Men’s marathon
Rio time: 09:30, AEST: Sunday 22:30
Australia has a full complement to battle the roads of Rio for 42 kilometres. Michael Shelley has a good championships record, making the podium twice at the last two Commonwealth Games and placing 16th at the last Olympics.  He is joined on the start line by Liam Adams and Scott Westcott. The latter becomes the oldest Australian athlete on debut, a journey that started in 2000 when he was in line for selection in the 5000m and 10,000m.

BASKETBALL – Men’s bronze medal match, Australia vs Spain
Rio time: 11:30, AEST: Monday 00:30
Australia will be looking for its first Olympic medal following four fourth place finishes since the sport debuted in 1956. Spain will be a challenge for Australia to overcome to secure that elusive medal. Spain’s form in this tournament in the pool round was mixed, winning three games and losing to Brazil (by one point) and Croatia (by two points). In the finals they defeated France comfortably before going down to the US by only six points – a little better than Australia’s 10 point loss.

In Olympic history the teams have meet on five occasions with Australia winning twice. The most recent clash was in London in the group stage where Australia lost 82-70. A medal here would be a great finale for the Australians.

CYCLING – Men’s Mountain Bike s
Rio time: 12:30, AEST: Monday 01:30
Australia will be represented by Scott Bowden and Daniel McConnell, in the final cycling event of the Games. Three-time Olympian McConnell will be aiming to improved on his previous two results of 39th and 21st. A physio student, Bowden made his debut in Rio and has already competed in the Road Race.

WRESTLING – Men’s 65kg freestyle
Rio time: 08:30, AEST: Sunday 21:30
The first event on the final day is the men’s 65kh freestyle wrestling. Sahit Prizreni, who carried the flag of Albania at the Beijing Olympics makes his Australian debut at Rio.
