Since the close of the delayed Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, Australian athletes, coaches, families, fans and media have been counting down to Saturday 27 July, the first full day of competition at Paris 2024.
On Day One of the Games, Australian athletes and teams will compete in 19 sports, and Australians will compete in events where medals are decided in six of these sports.

Equestrian: The Equestrian Eventing Team, with the dressage commencing at 5:30pm AEST, will be the first Aussies in action. Australia has a proud history in this event, with Shane Rose, Kevin McNab and Chris Burton looking for that elusive Olympic gold. Read the full equestrian preview here.
Tennis: Australia's tennis players face a tough test at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games with their first-round opponents to include world number two-ranked players Novak Djokovic (SRB) and Coco Gauff (USA).
Matt Ebden will play Djokovic after replacing Holger Rune (DEN), who withdrew from singles due to wrist injury. While Ajla Tomljanovic will fly the Aussie flag in the women’s singles draw when she faces Gauff on the clay court at Roland-Garros. Read the full tennis preview here.
Beach Volleyball: This sport is sure to create some of the most visually spectacular Olympic moments when play begins in the shadows of Paris’ iconic Eiffel Tower.
Tokyo Olympic silver medallists Taliqua Clancy and Mariafe Artacho del Solar aim to go one better in Paris where they are also seeking to become the first Australian team in 24 years to win gold.
If they succeed, they’ll equal the feats of countrywomen Natalie Cook and Kerri Pottharst who have won Olympic gold and bronze. Read the beach volleyball preview here.

Diving: The Women’s Synchronised 3m Final will see Maddi Keeney and Anabelle Smith dive for the medals at 7pm AEST. The pair won bronze at the Rio 2016 Olympics and are in fantastic form, including winning the Paris 2024 test event. Read the full diving preview here.
Cycling-Road: Grace Brown is Australia’s leading medal hope in the Time Trial after finishing fourth in Toyko. Grace will take confidence from consecutive silver medals at the past two World Championships. Lucas Plapp will ride the Men’s Time Trial after winning a track bronze medal in Team Pursuit in Tokyo. The Men's Time Trial will start at 12:30am AEST (Sunday 28 July) and will reach an average speed of 55 kilometres per hour.
Rugby Sevens: The Aussie Men have already had their best Olympic campaign, and they are full of confidence from being undefeated in Paris. They take on Fiji, the two-time defending champions at 12am AEST (Sunday 28 July). If the Aussies can beat Fiji, they’ll play France or South Africa for the gold at 3:45am AEST (Sunday 28 July). Swimming: Australia is hunting for four medals in the pool, with podium spots up for grabs in the men’s and women’s 400m freestyle and the men’s and women’s 4x100m freestyle relays. Headliners include Ariarne Titmus, Sam Short, Elijah Winnington, Emma McKeon and Mollie O’Callaghan. Swimming heats commence at 7pm AEST and finals from 4:30am AEST (Sunday 28 July). Basketball: The Boomers open their Paris campaign against Spain who are ranked number two in the world. Whilst a tough opener, the Aussies are ready. Tip off will be at 7pm AEST. Read the basketball preview here.
Judo: Sydney’s Josh Katz will compete in the Men’s 60kg division at the Arena Champ-de-Mars from 6pm AEST. Paris is the second Olympics for the 26-year-old, who is coached by his brother Nathan Katz. Read the judo preview here.
Artistic Gymnastics: Jesse Moore is Australia’s sole representative in the Men’s Artistic competition. Following his second All-Around title at the 2024 Australian Gymnastics Championships, Jesse secured his Olympic debut by claiming first place at the Oceania Continental Championships, in New Zealand in May.

Rowing: Australia has a 37-strong team across nine boats for the Olympic rowing regatta at the Vaires-sur-Marne Nautical Stadium in Paris from 27 July to 3 August.
The first race for Australia is at 6:10pm AEST in the Women’s Single Sculls heats with Tara Rigney, the 2022 and 2023 World Championship bronze medallist.
Also in action today is Harriet Hudson and Amanda Bateman in Women’s Double Sculls and Caitlin Cronin, Laura Gourley, Rowena Meredith and Ria Thompson in the Women’s Quadruple Sculls. Read the rowing preview here.
Water Polo: The Stingers open their campaign against China. The Australian women will take confidence into this contest having recently won a series 3-0 over China. The match will start at 4:00am AEST (Sunday 28 July). Read the water polo preview here.
Shooting: Returning for her third consecutive Olympics, pistol shooter Elena Galiabovitch will compete in the 10m Air Pistol today. Elena carried the IOC flag in the opening ceremony in Tokyo. She will also compete in the 25m Pistol later in the Games. Read the full shooting preview here.
Canoe/Kayak Slalom: On Day One of the Canoe/Kayak Slalom, four-time Olympian and Tokyo gold medallist Jess Fox will be on the water in the Women’s K1 heats. Jess won silver in London, bronze in Rio and and bronze in Tokyo in this event.

Skateboarding - *Postponed until Monday 29 July (Paris Time) due to weather*: Shane O’Neill, 34, returns for his second Olympic appearance in the Street event. The LA-based skater, who is known for innovative videos and tricks, is excited to challenge the Paris course. Read the full skateboarding preview here.
Surfing: Surfing at the Paris 2024 Olympics is being held at Teahupo’o, a small and quiet fishing village on the French Polynesian island of Tahiti. The first round of competition begins at 3am AEST (Sunday 28 July).
Up first is Men’s Shortboard round one with Jack Robinson and Ethan Ewing, followed by the Women’s Shortboard round one with Molly Picklum and Tyler Wright. Read the surfing preview here.
Hockey: Tokyo silver medallists the Kookaburras begin their Olympic campaign against Argentina at 9:15pm AEST. Coach Colin Batch’s team comes in on a high after winning the FIH Pro-League, but will be wary of the tricky South American side saying “We need to focus on the moment rather than think this is the first game of the Olympics”. Table Tennis: Australia’s Table Tennis campaign kicks off with the preliminary rounds for Singles and Mixed Doubles. Dual Olympian and Triple Paralympian Melissa Tapper, Min Hyung Jee, Finn Luu and Nicholas Lum are all in action. Read more on table tennis here.
