Alisa Camplin’s quest for back to back World Cup titles has been delayed by a career best performance from Flying Kangaroos team-mate Lydia Ierodiaconou, in the second of two aerial skiing events in Long-Zhu, China.
Ierodiaconou won her second event of the season with a personal best points score of 193.87, 16 clear of second placed Anna Zukal of Russia.
Camplin finished in third place, the result giving her 768 points for the season, just 19 short of clinching the World Cup with two events still to come.
Ierodiaconou stands on 587 points, the only aerialist with a theoretical chance of overtaking her older team-mate.
“I’m not thinking about the title race at all,” Camplin said.
“It’s not over until the end and a lot can happen.”
“Today I was just happy see Lydia win and to get third myself – that’s a great result for Australia.”
“I went to the moon on my jumps today, and I was glad I could get my skis under me on the landing.”
Swiss skier Evelyne Leu led the field after the first jump, with Ierodiaconou in second place, Chinese skier Jiao Wang in third and Camplin in fourth.
In the second jump Camplin lost points on her landing for sitting back on her skis, and both Leu and Wang faltered.
But Ierodiaconou was rock solid, landing the jump that had left her with concussion three weeks earlier in Canada, for her second 95 points plus score.
Liz Gardner and Lainie Cole both missed the final, Gardner finishing in 18th place and Cole in 19th. Both had gone through a tough time in the difficult training conditions, taking some solid hits that made performing at their best very difficult.
The fifth member of the team, Trudy McIntosh did not compete, after injuring her knee in training on Friday.
The next event will be in Spindleruv Mlyn, Czech Republic, on February 28.
Lydia Ierodiaconou quotes:
“I’ve had shocking training over here. I only did all my DD yesterday (before the first event).”
“It’s been very stressful with Trudy hurting herself, and the snow here has a really funny texture, so it has been very hard to get the speeds right.
“But it snowed overnight and it was a bit more consistent after that, so the speeds were better.”
“I had a feeling that it was going to be OK today. I was feeling pretty confident with my jumps. I wasn’t landing them great but they were feeling good.”
“I’ve told Alisa that I’m still after her for the title.”
