SPEED SKATING: Aussie speed skater Daniel Greig has smashed his way into the top-ten best skaters in the world, placing ninth in the 500m sprint at the World Cup in Berlin, Germany.

Greig has been consistently improving throughout the season but has broken through for his best performance yet in Berlin, recording a time of 35.26, just 0.46 second of the winner, Michael Mulder of The Netherlands.

It was Mulder’s second World Cup victory in the 500m, both on the Berlin track. He finished in 34.80, while Tae-Bum Mo of Korea, his strong pair mate, was 0.09 slower to place second. Keiichiro Nagashima of Japan, the only athlete this year to win two 500m races, finished in third place in 35.01.

With the Sochi 2014 Games fast approaching, the top-ten result for Greig couldn’t come at a better time as the 22-year-old from Melbourne looks to build momentum towards his debut Olympics.

His World Cup campaign continued on Saturday with the 1000m, placing 19th in a time of 1:10.47.

In the second 500m race of the event, Greig drew Ryohei Haga of Japan. Greig was 16th overall, finishing in 35.64 seconds, 0.77 off the eventual winner - Tae-Bum Mo of Korea.

Greig will now return to training, ahead of the World Sprint Speed Skating Championships in Nagano, Japan from 18 - 19 January.
