Big names out for glory: Day 4 Delhi

Olympic cycling medallist Anna Meares chases her third gold medal as some of Australia's biggest names seek Commonwealth Games glory on Thursday.

Olympic cycling medallist Anna Meares chases her third gold medal as some of Australia's biggest names seek Commonwealth Games glory on Thursday.

Meares hopes to add the individual sprint crown to her team sprint and time trial titles in Delhi.

Also Thursday, Olympic hurdles silver medallist Sally Pearson is eyeing the 100m gold medal as track and field competition continues, while swimmer Eamon Sullivan is favoured in the 100m freestyle.

But controversial cyclist Shane Perkins' bid for gold hangs in the balance following his petulance on Wednesday.

Perkins faces the wrath of Australian chef de mission Steve Moneghetti for crude gestures at officials after being dumped from the final of the men's kierin.

Perkins, omitted from the gold medal race for dangerous riding in a semi-final, is due to race for the sprint title on Thursday.

But given Moneghetti has ordered wrestler Hassene Fkiri, who made similar gestures to judges to be stripped of a silver medal, not leave the athletes' village for the rest of the Games, Perkins' fate is clouded.

Any penalty will be announced Thursday morning.

Perkins' colleagues in the men's pursuit team, led by individual pursuit gold medallist Jack Bobridge, will ride against New Zealand in Thursday's final.

In the pool, Sullivan is the quickest qualifier for the 100m freestyle final, with compatriots Tommaso D'Orsogna and Kyle Richardson also in the field.

The finals of the women's 100m butterfly, men's 400 individual medley and women's 800m freestyle will also be staged.

At the track, Pearson has a 100m semi-final and a likely final, with fellow sprinter Melissa Breen also aiming to make the final.

Pearson, the Beijing Olympics sprint hurdles silver medallist, justified her last minute decision to contest the 100m in Delhi by easing to victory in her heat in 11.50s on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, veteran shooter Russell Mark will defend his Commonwealth double trap title, his sights set on delivering Australia's first shooting medal of the Delhi Games.

Five gymnastics finals will be decided, with four wrestling and two weightlifting gold medals also on offer.
