GYMNASTICS: The 47th edition of the FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships continued at the Montreal Olympic Stadium today, with it this time being the Women’s turn to take to the competition arena.

The Australian Women’s Artistic Gymnastics team were up first, competing in sub division 1 alongside Commonwealth frenemies, Great Britain.

At 19, the veteran of the Australian team – Georgia Godwin (QLD) – looked every bit better for her experience at her first World Championships in 2015, brimming with confidence and polish out on the competition floor.

Although there are still four sub divisions remaining to be completed before final results from Qualifications are known, Godwin currently sits third All-Around with a total score of 51.874, and is in the running to qualify for the All-Around Final.  She is also currently ranked second on Beam behind Spain’s Ana Perez.

“I came into the competition wanting to hit four from four [routines] and I did that,” Godwin told Gymnastics Australia following competition.

“[I was] a bit messy here and there…but I hit four from four so I’m happy with that.

“There’s a lot of work I need to do to be able to compete with the higher level countries, but I’m excited to see at the end of the whole world qualifications…where I’m standing.”

Youngsters Rianna Mizzen (QLD) and Talia Folino (VIC) started off nervously in their first rotation on Floor in their World Championship debut, however Folino soon hit her straps, particularly on Bars, where she scored 13.200 and is currently ranked third.

“It was a bit of a rocky comp [for me] today,” Folino said, “but generally it was just great being out there and learning from this experience…it’s a different atmosphere here I was really happy being out there.”

17-year-old Mizzen unfortunately did not have her best competition on her World Championship debut, but also added that the experience was invaluable for her, particularly in the lead up to the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

“To be honest I feel a bit disappointed in myself but I guess it’s a good experience for me,” Mizzen said.  “It’s my first World Championships, so next time I go I’ll just remember what happened and learn from it…I’m just going to go home and train really hard…I know what’s expected of me for Commonwealth Games.”

Final standing from the Women’s Qualifications will be know tomorrow evening at approximate 9pm local time (12pm AEDST).
