Australian Canoeing (AC) confirms that Canoe Kayak athlete Tate Smith has received a two-year ban from competition following a decision by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) relating to three anti-doping rule violations.
In accordance with article 7 of the AC Anti-Doping Bylaw, Mr Smith was found to have committed two presence violations and one use violation for the prohibited substance 3’-hydroxystanozolol glucuronide (a metabolite of Stanozolol). Mr Smith tested positive for the prohibited substance in two out-of-competition samples provided on 21 and 22 July 2014 in Szolnok, Hungary.
The sporting ban means Mr Smith is ineligible to participate as an athlete or support person in Canoe Kayak for the duration of the sanction, the period of which includes the 2016 Olympic Games. Mr Smith is ineligible to compete in the sport until 8 September 2016.
AC condemns doping as fundamentally contrary to the spirit of sport. In accordance with the AC Anti-Doping Bylaw, AC will continue to protect the fundamental right of athletes to participate in doping‐free sport. AC remains committed to the ongoing detection, deterrence and prevention of doping.
