WEIGHTLIFTING: Australia’s Damon Kelly has won silver in the super heavyweight final at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in Pune, India.
His second placing on the final night of competition adds to the silver medal Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Francois Etoundi won in the men’s 77kg earlier in the week.
31-year-old Kelly went into the Commonwealth Championships with the goal of improving on the 361kg total he lifted to win the Australian Championships earlier this year.
He lifted a total of 366kg in Pune, nine kilograms less than Nauru’s man-mountain and Glasgow silver medallist, Itte Detenamo.
Kelly lifted 160kg in the snatch, and 206 kilograms in the clean and jerk.
India’s Kumar Sivalingam had the home crowd in raptures earlier in the week, when he dominated the 77kg class to win by a massive 28kg.
He snatched 150 kilograms and clean and jerked 175kg to finish with a 325kg total.
Australia’s Etoundi snatched 130kg and clean and jerked 167kg to finish second with a 297kg total.
