The Australian Women's Water Polo team suffered a narrow 8-9 loss to the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) in the quarter-finals.
The Aussie Stingers pushed ROC for the entire 32 minutes, the match going down to the wire after an incredible save in goals from Olympic debutant Gabriella Palm.
Despite more than 18 months without any international water competition the Aussie Stingers have delivered an inspired performance throughout the Olympics.
While they trailed by two for most of the match, an uplift in the dying minutes provided a glimmer of hope for the Aussies.

A goal from Townsville's Elle Armit brought it back to a 2 goal difference, before ROC earnt a 5m penalty. But the Aussie Stingers never looked like giving up, Palm saving the penalty shot and giving her side a confidence boost.
A timeout called with 1:01 minutes remaining, it was all on the line for the Stingers, debutant Bronte Halligan rising to the occasion, nailing one in the back of the net and the difference narrowed to 1.
But it was too late for a comeback and ROC were able to run down the clock claiming a one goal victory.
Triple Olympian and captain of the Aussie Stingers, Rowie Webster, lead her team proudly, saying she couldn’t fault the effort of the team.
“From the get go it was a goal for goal game.
“We kept trying, and we kept trying, and that was proof when Gabi came up with that save.

“We played to the whistle, and unfortunately in sport sometimes you don't always win.
“The fact that this team got ourselves to an Olympic Games with what they've all been through - I think that's a story within itself.
“Missing out on an opportunity to win a medal… it’s not so positive.
“It's taken us five years to get to this point, but we'll go back and we'll build. We still have games to go at the Olympic Games, so we're privileged for that,” she said.
The Aussie Stingers despite being out of contention for a medal will still play for the minor placing, set to take on Canada next.
