The AOC is mourning the passing of The Honourable Robert James “Bob” Ellicott AC KC, who passed away aged 95.

Mr Ellicott made an enormous contribution to sport and the Olympic movement, responsible for the creation of the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) as a former Solicitor General and Minister for Home Affairs and Environment in the Fraser Commonwealth Government, and as an international sports arbitrator and patron of Gymnastics Australia.

Awarded the AOC Order of Merit in 2006 for his contribution to sport, Mr Ellicott is an esteemed member of the Sport Australia Hall of Fame.

Mr Ellicott was an active member of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) from 1995-2018, including membership of several ad hoc Divisions for Olympic Summer and Winter Games, and a long-standing member of the IAAF (now World Athletics) Arbitration Panel.

AOC President Ian Chesterman paid tribute to the legacy of Mr Ellicott and his contribution to the Olympic movement.

“The AOC is saddened at the passing of Mr Bob Ellicott,” Mr Chesterman said.

“As a leading international sports arbitrator, patron of Gymnastics Australia and most importantly the driving force behind the establishment of the AIS at Bruce in Canberra, Mr Ellicott leaves an indelible legacy on the sporting landscape.

“So many young athletes have been able to chase and realise Olympic dreams through the world class development and fostering of the AIS – an impact that continues to this day and for future generations of Australians.

“As an active sports arbitrator with CAS and the IAAF, Mr Ellicott also strove to protect and uphold the integrity of sport at the highest level.

“The AOC extends our condolences to Mr Ellicott’s family and friends."
