7s World Cup win 2022

The AOC has congratulated the Australian women’s Rugby Sevens team on winning the Rugby Sevens World Cup in Cape Town, South Africa.

Defeating New Zealand 24-22 in a pulsating final, the Australians earned their first World Cup title since the inaugural women’s event in 2009.

With the World Cup only held every four years, the win caps an extraordinary season which also saw the team crowned World Series winners and Commonwealth Games champions.

AOC President Ian Chesterman applauded the team on their victory.

“What a fantastic way to cap an incredible season for the Australian women’s sevens team,” Mr Chesterman said. “Congratulations to the team, co-captains Demi Hayes and Charlotte Caslick, coach Tim Walsh and the team at Rugby Australia.”

“With three international titles this season, our team has demonstrated they are the benchmark for excellence in women’s sevens. This World Cup victory is fitting reward for the work put in by every player, coach and support staff over many years.

“The team made history in Rio 2016, winning the first ever Olympic gold medal in Rugby Sevens. Tokyo was tough for them but they have bounced back showing incredible resilience and determination. They continue to inspire with their performances, and I’m sure there are a lot of young girls and boys around the country picking up a rugby ball, motivated to try to become the next Sharni Williams or Charlotte Caslick.

“This is a huge win by the team on an international stage. Congratulations again to the entire team who are now on an exciting path to Paris 2024.”
