The AOC has congratulated Fiji's Dr Robin Mitchell on his appointment as President of the Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC) at this week’s General Assembly in Seoul, South Korea.

Dr Mitchell has been acting President in recent years but was appointed this week for a four-year term after an overwhelming vote from the Association's members.

AOC President Ian Chesterman says Dr Mitchell will do an excellent job of representing the interests of National Olympic Committees during his term, which runs through to 2026.

"Robin Mitchell has been an excellent advocate for the Oceania region for many years through his Presidency of the Oceania National Olympic Committees (ONOC). Importantly, he has been a champion of the Olympic movement on the global stage over that period also.

"ANOC has a vital role to play in representing the interests of NOCs around the world. Robin’s wisdom and experience will be brought to bear with his election to the Presidency this week.

"There are many challenges sport is facing in the current environment, but also many opportunities. With Robin's guidance, ANOC can play its part in addressing both.

Mr Chesterman also congratulated H.E. Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al-Thani who was also elected ANOC Senior Vice President at the General Assembly.

"We need a strong team to serve the needs of our athletes as we look forward to Paris 2024 and Milano-Cortina 2026. The ANOC membership has demonstrated the great faith it has in Dr Mitchell and Sheikh Joaan", Mr Chesterman concluded.
