The AOC has congratulated the Australian Table Tennis team on their record setting performances at the 2022 ITTF Oceania Championships in Melbourne.
Featuring a mix of Olympians and athletes aspiring for Paris and beyond, the Australian team incredibly won all 28 gold medals from 28 events, along with 18 silver and 21 bronze, achieving the best result in ITTF Oceania Championships history.
Olympic Scholarship holder Nicholas Lum became the youngest ever Oceania men’s singles champion at just 17, completing a clean sweep of the Open events to win the men’s singles, men’s doubles, mixed doubles and men’s teams.
The results also see Nicholas rocket to 42 in open world rankings and number one in U17 world rankings – the first time an Australian able-bodied athlete has held a global number one ranking across any age group.
The results also qualify Australia for both the Table Tennis World Championships in China next month and Junior World Championships in Tunisia this December.
AOC President Ian Chesterman congratulated the team on their performances.
“This is an outstanding result for the entire Australian Table Tennis team,” Mr Chesterman said.
“Congratulations to each of the athletes, the coaches, support staff and the entre team at Table Tennis Australia who contributed to this record setting achievement.”
“From experienced campaigners like six-time Olympian Jian Fang Lay to young athletes aspiring to their first Games, the team came together to perform at an extremely high level across the board.
“These results follow on from the medal winning performances by our table tennis athletes at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games and provides tremendous encouragement as they progress through the qualification process for Paris 2024.”
