Renee McCabe takes readers for a ride in Canada:
“Renee McCabe to the skeleton start position” …..
This is where the fun begins. I put my mouth guard in, put my helmet on and step out of the warm house. In between my heart pounding, swallowing any nerves and trying not to breathe too heavy in my helmet (because it will fog), I carry my sled “Gosh” to the start line. I try to steady myself and concentrate on the push and turn 1.
“The start is ready for Renee McCabe”
Ok, I get low, rock three times and push off and run as fast as I can, and steer hard. Corners 1, 2 and 3 are cruisey but 4 is the first big corner. 5, I have to go in the middle, 6 and 7 has to be spot on or otherwise 8 is late and you can’t be late in 8. Corner 9, Kreisel. Kreisel is where I can’t see anything cause my head is skidding on the ice because of the G force so I steer and hope like crazy I got it right otherwise you knock hard against the wall and the hear the crowd go “ahhh”.
When I reach 10, I ride this around and set up for 11. 11 is a corner to breathe and re-group, you take what you get in 11. Now 12 and 13 are steering corners but I get excited here cause I wanna do a fast time and it’s nearly the end. The last corner, 14, I come around and see the finish and breathe again.
1 minute and hopefully not many seconds later, I’ve finished!
