Young Aussie archers begin World Cup season

22 May 2017

ARCHERY: A team of young Australian archers have kicked off their World Cup season in Shanghai over the weekend.

Rio 2016 team bronze medallist Ryan Tyack (25) was joined by Samuel Strickland (18), Kane Wilson ( Ella Byrne (17) and Belinda Maxworthy (19) in the first major international event of 2017.

Tyack performed strongly in qualification scoring 669 to finish ranked 11th with Wilson claiming 75th (627) and Strickland 78 (626).

Unfortunately all three Aussie men lost their opening matches. After a first round bye Tyack went down to Malaysia's Muhammed Nor Hashin in the second round while Wilson went down to Erdal Dal of Turkey and Strickland lost to Mexico's Luis Alvarez.

Ella Byrne secured Australia's only match victory when she defeated Turkey's Begunhan Unsal 6-4 in her opening round encounter before going down to Lin Shih-Chia of Chinese Taipei 7-1.

Maxworthy took her match to the final set before going down to Nicole Tagle of the Phlippines 6-4.

The Aussies will next be in action at the Antayla World Cup in Turkey in early June.
