Willett wins World Cup gold

SHOOTING: Australian James Willett has won gold in the men’s Double Trap at the ISSF World Cup in New Delhi, India.

Going into the event ranked number three in the world, Willett defeated hometown favourite Ankur Mittal with a world record score of 75.

“It was really good to come out and win the first World Cup of the year. Great to start 2017 on a high,” Willett said.

The New South Welshman has had an outstanding 2017 so far, being named as Shooting Australia's Male Shooter of the Year for the second year in a row and today breaking the previous world record in the first event of the 2017 ISSF World Cup Series.

“I’m looking forward to the next events and the 2018 Commonwealth Games,” Willett added.

National Shotgun coach Adam Vella commented “I am really happy with the performances so far, and with another two events still to come hopefully we can get snag a few more medals before we leave.”

"James has established himself as one of the best Double Trap shooters in the world,” said Shooting Australia CEO Damien Marangon.

“What a wonderful start to the year for him. James is one of the most diligent and hardworking athletes in our sport and this result is a testament to his work ethic."

With Penny Smith’s Gold, Anton Zappelli’s Bronze and a World Cup Final first for Dane Sampson Australian target shooting has made an incredibly strong start to 2017.
