Water polo girls set sights on World League Finals

WATER POLO: While the Aussie Stingers didn’t get the start to their Asian Tour they’d hoped after the closed out the Kunshan Cup with a loss to Japan, the team are regrouping to set their sights firmly on the FINA World League Super Final which kicks off in Shanghai, China tomorrow.

The year proceeding the Rio Olympic Games has been focused on building a new look squad for the Aussie Stingers under Head Coach Sakis Kechagias, with a major milestone of 2017 the World Championships in July in Hungary.

The Kunshan Cup provided the Aussie Stingers, as well as other nations, the opportunity to trial combinations ahead of the two major international Tournaments in the next two months.

Only the second tour of the new Olympic cycle, Dual Olympian and Aussie Stingers Captain Rowie Webster said it was about bringing through the next generation of water polo players.

“Last week was a tough week of water polo at the Kunshan Cup playing some of the best teams from around the world.

“The Aussie Stingers unfortunately sustained some crucial injuries across the week, however this gave some of our debutants valuable international senior team experience.

“It’s onwards and upwards to the World League Super Finals and we are looking forward to improving with each game,” said Webster.

The Aussies have drawn group B in the World League Super Finals where they will face off against Hungary, Canada and China in the preliminary rounds.
