Table Tennis stars to hit the Gold Coast

9 June 2017

TABLE TENNIS: The biggest table tennis event to be held in Australia since the Sydney Olympics will be held on the Gold Coast next month.

The 2017 Australian Open has been added to the prestigious ITTF World Tour, offering record prize money for an event on Australian soil, and with most of the world's best players already confirmed to be attending.

Chinese Olympic silver medallist, Zhang Jike, and Japanese Olympic bronze medallist, Jun Mizutani, will line up against Australia's best including five-time Olympian Jian Fang Lay and four-time Olympian Miao Miao.

"This is an enormous boost for the sport of table tennis in Australia," Table Tennis Australia CEO, Peter Marriott, said.

"Being a part of the official ITTF World Tour guarantees the very best athletes will be coming to the Gold Coast.

"And with the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast only ten months away, it will be a wonderful opportunity for table tennis fans to get an early taste of the very top level of our sport."

The 2017 ITTF Seamaster Australian Open will run from July 2 through to July 7.

The event will attract more than 150 participants from around 30 countries to the Gold Coast, and a global television audience of more than 80 million.

The competition venue will be the newly constructed Gold Coast Sports & Leisure Centre which is located in the sporting precinct for the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
