Robyn Maher and Drew Ginn Honoured at Hall of Fame Awards

12 October 2018

AOC: It’s the greatest gathering of sporting royalty in Australia as Olympic legends mix with the greats of every sport in the country.

The 34th Sport Hall of Fame dinner held in Melbourne on Thursday October 12th was another reminder of the special place sport has in Australian life.

The Sports Hall of Fame inducted the late great Ritchie Benaud OBE as the 40th Legend of Australian Sport while the wonderful Paralympian Kurt Fearnley AO became the first disabled athlete to win the coveted Don Award, named after Sir Donald Bradman.

Also honoured was Olympic basketball champion Robyn Maher AM, a trail blazer in women’s sport and four-time Olympian rowing medallist Drew Ginn OAM as Athlete Members of the Sports Hall of Fame.

Other sporting greats honoured as Athlete Members were Harry Kewell, Alan Moffat OBE, Wendy Botha and Darren Lockyer. General members honoured were weightlifting administrator Sam Coffa AM and horse racing trainer Gai Waterhouse.

And there was a special cheer for Shane Gould AM, MBE, winner this week of Australian Survivor.

In a room of more than 1,000 guests, Olympic hurdler Kyle Vander Kuyp commented “You get a sore neck looking at all the sports greats in the one place.”
