Potts brings Olympic form back to Australia

4 October 2016

ARCHERY: Olympic bronze medallist, Alec Potts, has continued his good form from Rio at his first major domestic competition since returning to Australia, winning gold on the opening day of the National Archery Championships in Adelaide.

20-year-old Potts won gold in the non-Olympic recurve short distance event, finishing with 867 points to finish well clear of Queensland’s Sam Strickland on 835 points.

Potts teamed up with Ryan Tyack and Taylor Worth to win Australia’s first medal at the Rio Olympics, bronze in the men’s team event.

It was Australia’s first ever Olympic medal in the team event.

Potts is the only member of the Olympic trio competing at the National Championships in Adelaide, which is conducted under a different format to the Olympic Games.

Two-time Olympian, Deonne Bridger, was also in the winner’s circle on the opening day of the National Championships, taking the title in the women’s recurve short-distance event.

Bridger finished ahead of fellow Australian team member, Sunshine Coast archer, Chloe Grabs.

In other events, there were popular home town wins for South Australians Rhiannon Mills, in the women’s short-distance compound, and Pat Coghlan in the men’s compound.

2010 Commonwealth Games athlete and former world number two, Pat Coghlan, won the men’s short-distance compound, while fellow South Australian, Rhiannon Mills, won the women’s compound final.

The Australian National Championships continue on Monday
