CYCLING: Australia is in a strong position at the Dunc Gray Velodrome, after sweeping Saturday’s morning events.

In the fourth round of the men’s omnium, 3000m individual pursuit, Callum Scotson (Australia Gold) took out first place in 3 minutes 22.421 seconds just edging out fellow Australia Gold rider Sam Welsford by 0.458 seconds. Mathew Ross also from Australia Gold came third.

With only two events left in the men’s omnium, Bradley Heffernan from Australia Green remains in first place on 16 points.

Scotson has charged ahead from fourth place to second on 18 points followed by New Zealand’s Chad Elliston on 23.

In the men’s sprint time trials, Patrick Constable (Australia Gold) qualified fastest in 10.627 seconds. Alex Radzikiewicz (Australia Gold) was second in 10.684 seconds and Thomas Clarke (Australia Green) in 10.655 seconds.

Under 19 Australian national omnium champion Josie Talbot rode the fastest in the flying lap in 15.087 seconds. Australia Green rider Elissa Wundersitz came second followed by Alex Manly also from Australia Green.

The flying lap was the first of six rounds in the women’s omnium.

Two more rounds of the women’s omnium, in addition to the final of the men’s omnium, women’s keirin and men’s sprint will take place in the second session of the cycling Saturday afternoon, 2.30pm, at the Dunc Gray Velodrome.
