Aussies selected in alpine skiing

25 January 2010

Australia will be represented by two skiers in the high profile alpine skiing events at the Vancouver Olympic Winter Games next month.

The selection of Jono Brauer and Craig Branch to compete in the Downhill, Super G and Super Combined at the Whistler Creekside venue was confirmed today by the Australian Olympic Committee.

This is Branch’s third Olympic Team and Brauer’s second.

They will be the first Australians to compete at the Vancouver Olympic Winter Games when the men’s downhill is raced on February 13 – the morning after the Opening Ceremony.

The downhill is likely to be Branch’s strongest event at the Games. He is looking to improve on his 32nd placing from Torino 2006. He was 28th in the downhill at a World Cup in Canada in November.

Brauer, 28, who calls Thredbo home when he is in Australia, has been troubled by a knee injury for most of the season however his training is back going well and he had an encouraging result in Switzerland this week in the Super G.

The Super Combined is likely to be his strongest event and he has the ability to achieve a top 20 finish.

Both athletes are currently training together in Europe and will have their final preparations in Calgary, Canada before arriving in Vancouver on February 7.

The alpine skiing section of the 2010 Australian Olympic Winter Team:

Craig Branch (32), Sydney, NSW - Downhill, Super G, Super Combined
Jono Brauer (28), Thredbo, NSW - Downhill, Super G, Super Combined

Note: Australia is on the list to be allocated an additional quota place in the disciplines of slalom and giant slalom, by FIS under the quota reallocation process by 25 January 2010. If this occurs, Mike Rishworth has been nominated as the athlete to be added to the Team.

Note: If Jono Brauer is confirmed as an athlete ranked in the top 120 on the FIS points list slalom and giant slalom, he will be selected to also compete in these events.
