Tough loss to Aussies against a physical Italian outfit

12 August 2016

WATER POLO: The Australian women’s water polo team have suffered a narrow loss against rivals Italy 7-8 in game two of the pool stage.

Italy dominated from the outset, playing an aggressive game, taking an early 4-2 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Australia did their best to fight back with the scores locked at 6-6 leading into the final quarter. With both sides scoring one goal a piece, it came down to the dying seconds where Italy capitalised to take the win.

Olympic debutant Zoe Arancini said that while the loss was hard, the team just needed to put it behind them and focus on the next round.

“It was definitely not the result we were after. We have to move on, focus on the next game, focus on quarter-finals and hold our head high and move on,” said Arancini.

“It's a little bit of a come down after the win against Russia, we will just need to re-group.

“I believe we had the capacity to win it today - we had the extra man opportunities we just needed to put the goals away.

"We are lucky it wasn't a knock out game but we want to come out here and win every game,” she said.

The Aussies take on hosts Brazil on Saturday 13 August for the final round of the pool stage before the quarter-finals get underway on Monday 15 August.
