Beijing 2022

Beijing won the bid for the 2022 Olympic Winter Games on 31 July 2015 and has become the first city in the world to host both a summer and winter Olympic Games.

The 109 events in 15 disciplines (seven Olympic winter sports) were held across three competition zones. They included:

Central Beijing
- Curling, Ice Hockey, Figure Skating, Speed Skating, Short Track Skating, snowboard big air, freestyle skiing big air.

Yanqing
- Bobsleigh, Skeleton, Luge.

Zhangjiakou
- Snowboard, Freestyle Skiing, Cross-Country Skiing, Ski Jumping, Nordic Combined, Biathlon.

Norway maintained top spot on the medal tally from PyeongChang 2018 to Beijing 2022, having earned 37 medals in China of which 16 were gold.

Australia at these Games

The Australian Team at Beijing 2022 featured 43 athletes – 22 women and 21 men, our third largest Winter Olympic Team ever. The Team secured Australia’s greatest ever winter Olympic medal haul with four medals - one gold, two silver and one bronze.

Laura Peel (Freestyle Skiing) and Brendan Kerry (Figure Skating) represented Australia as our Opening Ceremony Flag Bearers, with Sami Kennedy-Sim as Flag Bearer for the Closing Ceremony.

Jakara Anthony became the first Winter Olympic champion from Australia in 12 years when she blitzed the freestyle skiing moguls field. She posted the best two scores of the competition, winning gold with a score of 83.09.

Scotty James went one better than the bronze medal he picked up at PyeongChang 2018, as he jumped up to a silver medal in an all-time great snowboard halfpipe final.

A silver medal for Jackie Narracott in Skeleton was the first in Australian history from any sliding sport (Bobsleigh, Luge and Skeleton).

Tess Coady became Australia’s youngest ever Winter Olympic medallist, and our only snowboard slopestyle medallist, when she won bronze competing on a fractured ankle.

In participating at their fourth Winter Olympics together, Britt Cox (freestyle skiing, moguls) and Scotty are now two of six Aussies to reach that milestone.

Australia's youngest athlete in Beijing was Valentino Guseli, the 16-year-old snowboard halfpipe sensation who finished sixth. He is the only Aussie ever under 18 years of age to crack the top 10 at the Winter Olympics in any sport.

Sophie Ash (mogul skiing) and Gabi Ash (aerial skiing) were the first Aussie sisters to compete on the same Australian Winter Olympic Team.
