Zali's Story
Brilliant skier Zali Steggall set a number of firsts in winning the bronze medal in women’s slalom at the Nagano Winter Olympics. She became the first woman and the first skier ever to win a Winter Olympic medal for Australia. Her medal was only the second Winter Olympic medal in Australia’s history, following the bronze won by the men’s 5000m relay short track speed skating team four years earlier. Steggall remains Australia’s most successful alpine skier, competing in four Winter Olympics from 1992-2002. As well, she was the first Australian to win an alpine skiing world championship title, winning the 1999 women’s slalom event.
