Thomas's Story

Tom Cusack showed his international potential at a young age when he lined up for Australia at Schoolboys and Under 20s levels in the fifteen man game. He made his Sevens debut in 2013 and won Commonwealth Games bronze in 2014. Despite a wrist injury keeping him out for a number of 2015/16 World Series tournaments he secured his spot on the Australian team for Rio 2016.

The Aussies got off to a slow start in Rio after opening the tournament with a 31-14 point loss to France. Australia bounced back with a 26-12 victory over Spain before Cusack’s try proved crucial in the side’s 12-5 win over South Africa in their final group match to keep their medal hopes alive. They again faced the South African side in the quarter-finals and, despite Cusack again scoring, it was the BlitzBokke who reversed the result to claim a 22-5 win over the Aussies and move through to the final four. Losses to Argentina and France followed for Australia who finished the tournament in eighth. Cusack finished as the side’s leading try scorer having crossed the line four times.
