Sunni's Story

Born in Newcastle, FFA Hall of Fame inductee, Sunni Hughes began her footballing career with the Matildas in 1989, earning 78 caps and scoring 24 goals before she retired in 2000. 

 

After scoring six goals over two games during the 1991 FIFA Women's World Cup qualifiers, the agile striker competed in the Matildas' first-ever world cup campaign in 1995 where she played in all three of the Matildas' matches.

She then competed at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games where she became Australia's second woman to score a football goal at an Olympics, behind Australia's first-ever woman goalscorer, Cheryl Salisbury.

In 2013, Hughes was inducted into the FFA Hall of Fame.
