Stephanie's Story
Xu 'Stephanie' Sang first started playing table tennis at the age of six. In 2002, the Chinese-born athlete moved to Australia to study when she was just 15 years old, later becoming an Australian citizen in 2006.
In her first year competing nationally, the Victorian-based athlete was announced as the top ranked Australian table tennis player after an outstanding year competing.
In 2006, she was chosen to represent Australia at the Melbourne Commonwealth Games where she won silver in the team event.
At the 2008 Olympic selection trials, Sang qualified third, claiming the final table tennis position on the 2008 Australian Olympic Team.
Making her Olympic debut in Beijing was particularly special for Sang, as it was her birthplace and a lot of her family still lived in China at the time of the Games.
At the Games, Sang reached the second round in singles and placed ninth in the team event.
After taking time off from the sport in order to raise two children, the 33-year-old made an impressive comeback to her sport in 2019.
