Sisay's Story
Marathon runner Sisay Bezabeh is a dual Olympian having competed at the Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004 Olympic Games. Born in Assella, Ethiopia, Bezabeh first came to Sydney as a competitor in the 1996 World Junior Athletics Championships. After the meet, he was accepted as a refugee because of civil war in Ethiopia. Bezabeh qualified to compete for Australia at the Sydney 2000 Games, finishing 25th in the marathon. Four years later he placed 60th out of 102 competitors. Bezabeh’s brother Alemayehu is also an Olympian, competing for Spain at the 2008 Games.
