Sinton's Story

1887 – 1976

At Antwerp 1920, World War I veteran Stinton Hewitt became the first Australian to complete the marathon at an official Olympic Games. George Blake had finished sixth at the unofficial Intercalated Games at Athens in 1906.

Hewitt also competed in the heats of the 10,000 metres at Antwerp. During the war, he was one of the boundary umpires for the famous game of Australian Rules football played in London in October 1916 between Australian troops, most of whom were Victorian Football League (VFL) players. One of the organisers of that game was a team-mate of his at Antwerp, the swimmer Frank Beaurepaire.

Hewitt also represented Australia at the Inter-Allied Games in Paris in July 1919.
