Shaun's Story
Shaun Boyle, 35, was the first Australian to compete at the elite level in the sport of skeleton. At his first Olympic Games at Torino in 2006 he and Michelle Steele became the first Australians to compete at the Olympics. Boyle slid two clean runs on the challenging track and placed 22nd in Torino.
‘The Boyler’ from Wollongong was a volunteer at the Sydney 2000 Olympics and then reinvented himself as a skeleton athlete in order to realise his dream of being in an Olympic Games himself. He began in 2001 and then had his first international competition in 2004, contesting the World Cup in Winterberg, finishing 19th. Boyle retired from international competition at the end of 2006.
In Torino his Scottish family crest including symbols of great significance were painted on the base of his sled and helmet.
