Sam's Story

Sam Groth made his Olympic debut in Rio in the men’s singles after a last minute call up to the Australian Olympic Team.

He lost in the opening round 2-1 to Germany’s David Goffin.

Groth took up tennis at the age of 10 in Corowa, NSW, and was awarded the 2015 Newcombe medal.

Groth made the decision to focus on tennis over AFL at 16, moving to Melbourne to train. In 2011, he switched sports to play AFL for the Vermont Eagles in Melbourne, but returned to play tennis in 2012. His favourite team in the AFL is the Sydney Swans.

The right-handed player is well known as the fastest serve on record, registering 163.4 mph (263 kph), at the 2012 ATP Challenger in Busan, Korea.
