Richard's Story

1968 -

Richard Nizielski was a triple Olympian for Australia, competing at the Winter Olympics in 1992, 1994 and 1998. His finest moment came when he was part of the men’s 5000m short track speed skating team that won a bronze medal in 1994, Australia’s first Winter Olympic medal. Nizielski competed alongside Steven Bradbury (later to become Australia’s first Winter Olympic gold medallist in 2002), Kieran Hansen and Andrew Murtha to win the medal. It was Nizielski who flashed across the finish line in the relay for Australia. He also raced in the relay event at his two other Olympic appearances, as well as the men’s 1000m in 1992 and the men’s 500m and 1000m events in 1994.
