Peter's Story
Peter Evans was born in Perth in 1961 and began swimming at a young age, finding his strongest stroke in breaststroke. He emerged nationally in 1979, placing second in the 200m breaststroke at the Australian Championships. The following year, he won the national 100m breaststroke title and qualified for the Moscow Olympic Games.
At 18, Evans won bronze in the 100m breaststroke at Moscow 1980 before combining with Mark Kerry, Mark Tonelli and Neil Brooks to win the 4x100m medley relay. Swimming the breaststroke leg, Evans produced a personal-best performance that helped the quartet secure one of Australian swimming’s most celebrated victories.
Evans returned at Los Angeles 1984 and won another bronze medal in the 100m breaststroke. He also helped Australia claim bronze in the medley relay, completing his Olympic career with one gold and three bronze medals. Evans also won medley relay gold and 100m breaststroke bronze at the Brisbane 1982 Commonwealth Games.
