Olivia Price

At the age of 19 and on her Olympic debut, Olivia Price pulled off a remarkable feat to skipper her crew of Lucinda Whitty (22) and Nina Curtis (24) to a silver medal in the Elliot 6m Match Racing event at the London 2012 Games.

Olivia Price started sailing on the ISAF World Cup Women's Match Racing Tour at the age of 16 and has remained the youngest woman competing in the tour since she began in 2008. By 2010, Price had sailed to the ISAF Women's World Ranking's #1 rank as bowman. In what was an extremely successful year, Price claimed the 2010 Australian Women's Match Racing Champion as skipper and the 2010 Australian National Open Match Racing Champion as crew.

Midway through 2011, Price began skippering her own boat on the ISAF World Cup and took out bronze in the 3rd event with crew Nina Curtis and Lucinda Whitty. The trio went on to compete at the Olympic Test event in Weymouth, UK, where they finished 5th.

Price and her crew headed to their debut Games full of confidence after some strong performances to kick off the Olympic year and it showed. Having remained undefeated in the round robin stage of the competition, the trio went on to beat the Netherlands and Finland to book themselves a spot in the gold medal race.

Price and her teammates lined up against Spain in the final and with the crews splitting the opening two races disaster struck the Aussies as Whitty fell overboard and the Spanish took the leg win. Australia pulled off a remarkable effort to win the next leg despite Whitty having little time to recover from the freezing Weymouth conditions before they were finally beaten 3-2. The silver medal added to the three gold medals that Australia’s other crews won to ensure that the sailing team was Australia’s most successful in London.

Price would have been the youngest ever female sailor to stand on top of the podium if they had of conquered the Spanish in the final.
