Naomi's Story

Women’s boxing made its Olympic debut at the London 2012 Olympic Games and West Australia’s Naomi Fischer-Rasmussen was Australia’s sole female competitor. Fishcer-Rasmussen was a state and national champion in karate kumite until she was 19 when she decided to take up boxing to add an extra element to her karate skills. She was ranked world number one in 2011 based upon points accumulated in international competition throughout 2010. She then made the move up to the 75kg division in 2010 after it was announced that it was one of three weight divisions that would be introduced to Olympic competition in London. Facing a much bigger opponent in Sweden’s Anna Laurel, the Australian went down 24-17.
