Mia's Story

Mia Santoromito won a bronze medal for Australia in women’s water polo in 2008. Santoromito drove home the final penalty for Australia in its thrilling penalty shootout win in the bronze medal final against Hungary. The two teams were tied at full time and played two periods of extra time before the penalty shootout. The final score was 12-11 to Australia. The Sydneysider had a special reason to celebrate the podium finish - her younger sister Jenna was also on the team. The Santoromitos were one of two sets of sisters represented – Kate Gynther, Melissa Rippon and Rebecca Rippon are also sisters. The bronze was Australia’s second women’s water polo medal following its Sydney 2000 gold.
