Matt Celotti started judo when he was eight years old. Celotti won the national 100kg title in 2000, 2001 and 2003 but missed selection on the 2004 Athens Olympic Team. Celotti took a break from judo and began playing AFL before returning in 2007 to win another national title and Olympic Team selection. Celotti competed in the half-heavyweight division at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, losing in the opening round.
