Mathew's Story

Mathew Helm is a three-time Olympian in diving (Sydney 2000, Athens 2004, Beijing 2008). Helm’s silver medal in the platform diving at Athens was the first medal by an individual male Australian diver since Richmond Eve’s gold at Paris 1924. The gold medallist was Hu Jia of China with the Olympic champion from Sydney, Tian Liang, in third place. Helm’s excellent final dive relegated Tian, who had led after four dives, to the bronze medal position. At Athens, Helm also joined with Robert Newbery to claim a bronze medal in the synchronised platform diving. Helm came out of retirement and gained selection for the Beijing Games where he placed fourth in the synchronised 10m platform and sixth in the individual 10m.
