Martin's Story
Martin Callaghan emerged as an international water polo player while still in his teens. He helped Australia finish second at the 1980 Olympic qualification tournament in Sofia, securing the team’s place at the Moscow Games.
Callaghan made his Olympic debut in Moscow aged 17, where Australia finished seventh after winning three of its four classification matches. He returned for Los Angeles 1984, helping Australia advance to the medal round and achieve an improved fifth-place finish.
Callaghan’s international career extended well beyond his two Olympic appearances. He represented Australia at the 1982 and 1986 World Championships before returning for the 1991 World Championships in Perth, where the host nation placed eighth.
