Katrina's Story

1972 -

Katrina Powell won successive gold medals with the Hockeyroos in 1996 and 2000. Powell was joined on both gold medal teams by her sister, Lisa Carruthers (nee Powell), making the pair one of the rare sets of sisters to have shared Olympic glory. Powell was rated among Australia’s most effective attackers during her stellar international career. She famously scored the final goal in Australia’s 3-1 victory against South Korea in the 1996 gold medal final. Her second gold medal was won four years later in front of a home crowd in Sydney, with Australia defeating Argentina 3-1 in the final. Powell competed in her third Olympics in Athens, where the team placed fifth. Remarkably, this meant she finished her career with the identical Olympic record as her older sister, Lisa, also a triple Olympian, who had finished fifth with the Hockeyroos in 1992.
