Karen Moras-Stephenson

At Mexico City 1968 the 14-year-old Karen Moras bravely battled the rarefied atmosphere to finish fourth in the 800 metres freestyle and then third in the 400 metres, both times behind the triple gold medallist in the women's events over 200 metres, Debbie Meyer of the United States. At the Commonwealth Games at Edinburgh, Moras peaked by winning the 200 metres, 400 metres and 800 metres with a world record in the last-mentioned event. The year after Moras's triumphs at Edinburgh a new star of women's swimming had arrived on the scene, Shane Gould. At Munich 1972, Moras competed in the heats of the 400 metres, 800 metres and 400 metres individual medley.
