Julie McDonald

1970 -

Julie McDonald was the only Australian woman to win a swimming medal in Seoul, winning the bronze in the 800m freestyle event. A Queenslander, McDonald won her heat to reach the final, where she took more than six seconds off her heat time to secure the medal. McDonald returned to the Games in 1992 but failed to reach the final in either of her two events, the women’s 400m and 800m freestyle. She also captained the Australian team at the 1991 world championships and won two Commonwealth Games gold medals.
