Jane's Story

Jane Saville's Sydney 2000 Olympic Games campaign was one of the most heartbreaking stories of the Games. Leading the field in the 20km road walk, Saville had less than 300 metres remaining to the finish line. With the capacity stadium roaring, Saville was tragically disqualified. In Athens four years later, Saville beat her demons to win the bronze medal in the 20km event, Australia's first women's Olympic walking medal in 1:29.25 in extreme heat.

At the Beijing 2008 Games, Saville contested her fourth Olympics (having made her debut in the 10km road walk in Atlanta 1996). Having struggled with an injury in early 2008, Saville was unable to repeat her medal winning performance of Athens, finishing 20th in a time of 1:31.17 in what were wet and tough conditions.

The highly decorated athlete also contest four Commonwealth Games (Victoria 1994, Kuala Lumpur 1998, Manchester 2002 and Melbourne 2006), winning a total of three gold medals.

Saville is married to Olympic cyclist Matt White and her sister Natalie is also an Olympian in race walking.
